Digitization is expected to change the landscape for broadcasters, content owners and distributors. Our view is that Digitization in the metros wont happen by the new deadline. A further extension of the deadline is expected by all in the Industry though not talked about with blame being passed around. The only random variable is the Supreme Court which may decide to do what it did in the shut down Telco by cancelling licenses. Digitization wont make the customer pay more for Television because of two reasons.

TV viewers can be segmented into urban old and urban young. The urban old are not used to paying top dollar for TV consumption and that wont change. The urban young probably wont pay for TV consumption because they prefer non linear consumption and would rather pay for content on internet. This is borne out by the Broadband ARPU being three to four times more than Analog ARPU and double that of a comparable house Digital ARPU.

Secondly tariffs of broadcasters are already inflated. If one were to take the published analog cable tariff and apply it to one of the popular packs on DTH the resultant pack cost would be in the range of Rs. 800 to 1300 which probably wont ever be ARPU in the next few years. What certainly will happen then is unbundling and consolidation in the 400 plus channel landscape in India.
